01 · At a glance

Workshop Quick Summary

11oz Standard

Ceramic Mug

Temperature
385°F (195°C)
Time
180–210 sec
Pressure
Medium to Firm
Peel
Warm or Hot

Standard straight-wall profile with a standard cycle duration.

15oz Large

Ceramic Mug

Temperature
385°F (195°C)
Time
210–240 sec
Pressure
Firm
Peel
Warm or Hot

The thicker base acts as a heat sink. Add 20–30 seconds to lock the bottom edge.

Critical Safety Rule

AIR COOL ONLY: Always air cool on a heat-safe rack. Never quench hot ceramics in water—rapid thermal shock causes hidden glaze micro-crazing or bottom cracks.

02 · Equipment

04 · Production workflow

Standard 4-Step SOP

STEP 01

Clean & Dehumidify

  • Wipe the blank with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol or a lint roller to remove micro-dust and fingerprints.
  • In humid regions, pre-warm the empty mug in the press for 10 seconds before taping to flash off residual moisture.

STEP 02

Align & Secure Tape

  • Position your mirrored sublimation print tightly against the mug wall.
  • Secure firmly with thermal tape along the seam and top and bottom edges. Zero slack helps prevent ghosting.

STEP 03

Press to Time

  • Insert the mug into pre-heated equipment. Close the clamp smoothly so the paper does not shift.
  • Always handle heated mugs with thermal gloves.

STEP 04

Air Cool Naturally

  • Peel the transfer paper in one continuous motion while warm.
  • Place the mug upright on an open wire cooling rack. Never submerge it in water.

05 · Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting FAQ

Why is the bottom rim of my 15oz mug faded or under-pressed?

Cause: The thick ceramic base acts as a heat sink, taking longer to reach the 385°F sublimation threshold.

Solutions:

  1. Increase press dwell time by 20–30 seconds.
  2. Pre-heat just the bottom edge on the edge of the press platen for 10–15 seconds before full clamping.
  3. For full-bleed prints touching the bottom edge, use heat shrink wrap in a convection oven for 360° coverage.
Why did my ceramic mug crack or craze during cool-down?

Cause: Thermal shock. Hot glaze contracts at a different speed than the stoneware core if cooled abruptly.

Solutions:

  1. Never quench hot ceramics in water or set them on ice-cold stone countertops. Place them on a wire rack or silicone pad at room temperature.
Why are my black prints turning brown or looking scorched?

Cause: Over-sublimation from excessive heat, excessive time, or platen hot spots.

Solutions:

  1. Drop the temperature by 5°F–10°F or reduce press time by 15–20 seconds. Check actual platen heat with an infrared surface thermometer.
Why does the artwork show ghosting, halos, or double lines?

Cause: Transfer paper moved while the ink was in its gaseous state.

Solutions:

  1. Tape the paper down tighter with high-temperature heat tape. Open the press handle slowly so vacuum suction does not tug the paper, then peel the paper away in one steady pull.

Disclaimer

All parameters provided above are starting baselines tested under standard laboratory conditions. Because heating elements, press brands, and room humidity can create slight temperature deviations (±10°F), we recommend pressing a single test sample before running high-volume pallet batches.
